When Professor Stella Chinye Chiemeke took over as the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, she inherited the enormous responsibility of building a brand-new university into a reputable institution of higher learning. Five years later, few would argue that she accomplished that mission with remarkable success.

Under her leadership, UNIDEL transformed from a young university finding its feet into one of Nigeria's fastest-growing public universities. Through deliberate academic planning, quality assurance, infrastructural development and an uncompromising commitment to excellence, she positioned the institution on the national and international academic map. Today, UNIDEL has become one of the first choices for thousands of admission seekers across Nigeria.

Her achievements naturally endeared her to staff, students, parents, alumni and numerous stakeholders. So impressive was her stewardship that many influential voices openly canvassed for an extension of her tenure. This writer was proudly one of them.

However, the law establishing the tenure of Vice-Chancellors in Nigerian universities is clear. Five years is five years. No matter how outstanding the performance, the law must take its course.

As the end of Professor Chiemeke's tenure approached, anxiety quietly spread across the university community.

Who would succeed her?

Would the next Vice-Chancellor sustain the momentum?

Would the culture of academic excellence survive a leadership transition?

Those were genuine questions on the minds of many who genuinely love UNIDEL.

Then came the appointment of Professor Eric Chiedum Eboh, who officially assumed office as the University's second substantive Vice-Chancellor on April 28, 2026.

For many observers, the appointment initially generated curiosity. But it did not take long before his impressive academic pedigree and administrative credentials began speaking louder than any speculation.

Professor Eboh arrived with an enviable résumé built over more than three decades of distinguished scholarship, research, public policy and university administration.

A Professor of Agricultural Economics since October 2002, he earned his Bachelor of Agriculture from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1985, obtained his Master's degree from the University of Ibadan in 1987 and completed his PhD at the University of Nigeria in 1991.

His career has been anything but ordinary.

From serving as Executive Director of the African Institute for Applied Economics (now AfriHeritage) to pioneering the Distance Learning Programme at the University of Nigeria, Professor Eboh has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership.

Beyond academia, he has shaped public policy at the highest levels, serving as Chief Job and Wealth Creation Officer and Head of the Delta State Job and Wealth Creation Bureau, while also playing key roles in the Delta State Economic Management Team.

His expertise has attracted collaborations with globally respected institutions including the World Bank, UNDP, FAO, USAID, UNECA, the European Union, IFAD, CBN, National Bureau of Statistics, SMEDAN and several other international development organisations.

His academic influence is equally extraordinary. Through supervision, mentorship and co-supervision, Professor Eboh has produced twelve Professors and over thirty PhD holders who today contribute significantly to teaching, research and national development.

His professional development equally reflects excellence, having attended executive programmes at Duke University, Georgia State University and Harvard Business School.

Clearly, UNIDEL did not appoint an ordinary administrator.

It appointed a globally exposed scholar, an accomplished researcher, a respected policy expert and an experienced institution builder.

Yet, impressive credentials alone do not build great universities.

Vision does.

On the very day he assumed office, Professor Eboh unveiled what may well become the defining philosophy of his administration - Project RAISE UNIDEL Higher.

Far from being an ordinary slogan, Project RAISE provides a strategic blueprint for taking the university to its next phase of development.

The initiative rests on five carefully articulated pillars.

The first is Research and Innovation, aimed at strengthening the University's research ecosystem to produce solutions with national impact.

The second is Academic Excellence, reinforcing the institution's commitment to maintaining the highest standards in teaching, learning and scholarship.

The third pillar focuses on ICT Optimisation, expanding digital technologies across teaching, learning, administration, research and service delivery to position UNIDEL among Nigeria's truly digital universities.

The fourth pillar prioritises Staff Professional Development and Welfare, recognising that motivated lecturers and non-teaching staff remain the backbone of any successful university.

The fifth pillar seeks to provide an Environment Conducive for Staff, Students and Stakeholders, ensuring that learning, research and community engagement flourish in a peaceful, supportive and well-managed environment.

Underlying these five pillars is a simple but powerful philosophy: growth and sustainability.

Professor Eboh has also pledged to lead through transparency, integrity, accountability, consultation, collaboration, teamwork and constant feedback, qualities that inspire confidence in any modern university administrator.

Perhaps what has impressed many observers is that the new Vice-Chancellor has chosen continuity over disruption.

Rather than dismantling the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, he has committed himself to building upon it.

That decision alone demonstrates administrative maturity.

Barely a few months into his administration, encouraging signs have already begun to emerge.

The University's second semester examinations are nearing completion, with the institution maintaining its long-established culture of academic discipline, examination integrity and operational efficiency.

Even more significant is the recent approval by the University Senate for the commencement of postgraduate academic programmes.

This milestone marks another important chapter in UNIDEL's growth story.

The introduction of postgraduate studies will deepen research activities, expand academic opportunities, attract more scholars and further enhance the University's reputation within Nigeria and beyond.

For an institution that is still relatively young, this is no small achievement.

It signals confidence.

It reflects institutional maturity.

It demonstrates readiness for the next level.

Leadership transitions often determine whether institutions continue to grow or begin to decline.

Fortunately, early indications suggest that UNIDEL has successfully navigated that critical transition.

Professor Stella Chiemeke deserves lasting commendation for laying a solid institutional foundation.

Professor Eric Chiedum Eboh now carries the responsibility of consolidating those gains while opening new frontiers of academic excellence, research innovation and global competitiveness.

His credentials inspire confidence.

His vision provides direction.

His leadership style encourages collaboration.

His strategic blueprint offers hope.

Of course, every administration will eventually be judged by results rather than promises. But if the first few months are anything to go by, the signs are encouraging.

UNIDEL appears to have retained not just continuity but renewed momentum.

The University community can therefore look ahead with optimism.

For many stakeholders who once worried about life after the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, those fears are gradually giving way to confidence.

Indeed, from every indication, the University of Delta, Agbor, is in capable hands.

And if Project RAISE UNIDEL Higher is pursued with the same discipline, consistency and commitment that Professor Eric Eboh has demonstrated throughout his distinguished career, the young university may well be on course to becoming one of Nigeria's foremost centres of academic and research excellence.

For now, one conclusion appears increasingly difficult to dispute:

UNIDEL is in safe hands with Professor Eric Chiedum Eboh.
