The Department of Business Administration, University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and quality assurance as it successfully organized the proposal defence exercise for its 400-level graduating students.
The event, which took place at the Faculty of Management Sciences Boardroom, Owa-Oyibu Campus, brought together faculty members, project supervisors, assessors, and final-year students in what many described as a robust academic engagement aimed at preparing students for the final stage of their undergraduate research journey.
Setting the tone for the exercise was the Head of Department, Dr. Mrs. F. K. Igweh, whose opening remarks reflected both the seriousness and significance of the occasion. Welcoming faculty members and students to the exercise, she emphasized that the proposal defence was not merely a departmental routine but a critical quality assurance mechanism designed to uphold the academic standards of the University of Delta, Agbor.
According to Dr. Igweh, the exercise serves as a preparatory platform for the students ahead of their forthcoming external defence. She explained that the proposal defence, which covers Chapters One, Two, and Three of the students' research projects, provides an opportunity for faculty members to assess the level of preparedness of each student and make constructive recommendations that would strengthen the quality of their research work.
"The essence of this exercise is to ensure that students receive professional guidance and constructive criticism before proceeding to the remaining chapters of their projects. It allows us to identify gaps, suggest corrections, and ensure that the final output meets acceptable academic standards," she noted.
The Head of Department further reminded the students that the project course carries a six-credit unit load and remains one of the most important academic requirements for graduation. She therefore urged them to approach the exercise with utmost seriousness and dedication.
"Your performance at this stage is crucial. It will influence the quality of your final project and ultimately contribute significantly to your academic progression within the university. This is not an exercise to be taken lightly," she advised.
In a moment that underscored the department's alignment with the broader vision of the institution, Dr. Igweh commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof. Eric Eboh, for his transformative "Project RAISE UNIDEL Agenda." She assured stakeholders that members of the Department of Business Administration have fully embraced the vision and are working tirelessly to ensure that the department contributes meaningfully to the realization of the Vice-Chancellor's goals.
Observers at the exercise noted that the students rose magnificently to the occasion. One after another, the final-year students confidently presented and defended their research proposals, demonstrating commendable understanding of their research topics, methodologies, and theoretical foundations.
Throughout the day, the atmosphere in the boardroom was characterized by intellectual rigour, healthy academic exchanges, and insightful contributions from faculty members. The students responded intelligently to questions, defended their positions with confidence, and displayed a level of preparedness that reflected the quality of mentorship they have received from the department.
The exercise also highlighted the Department of Business Administration's culture of excellence, mentorship, and continuous improvement. Faculty members meticulously evaluated each presentation, offering scholarly observations and practical recommendations aimed at enhancing the overall quality of the students' research work.
With the successful completion of the proposal defence, students are now expected to proceed with Chapters Four and Five of their projects, incorporating the corrections and recommendations made during the exercise before presenting their completed work for external defence.
The event further reinforced the growing reputation of the University of Delta, Agbor, as one of Nigeria's emerging centres of academic excellence. Through initiatives such as the proposal defence exercise, the institution continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the critical thinking and research skills required in today's competitive world.

Igweh (Head of Department), Dr Leo Ojogbo, Dr. Adams Bello, Dr. Ibini Emuje, Dr. Hilary Odor, Dr. Ewere Obieze, Dr. Mrs. Martha Taegar, Dr. Mrs. C.
